Job overview

The overall research project focuses on contemporary interpretation of the Mutapa-Rozvi-Ndebele landscapes and how these could be better interpreted for the self-knowledge of Zimbabweans. There will be focal aspects of the research, especially in the period from 1830 to 1900. This assignment is only for the initial part of the project (2021-22), as this research will complement and triangulate material that NMMZ is compiling aimed at the initial establishment of an interpretive centre at several monuments and eventually make it possible to establish interpretive centres and museums at significant sites. In addition to upgrading the heritage status of the national monuments, it is expected to allow the design and roll out of memorials, touristic and educational activities for the public. The intern will work both administratively under the supervision of Professor Rukuni, as well as professionally under an appropriate pre-history scholar.

Responsibilities and duties

The intern/PhD student will:

  • Search for Archaeological, Ethno-historical, Pictorial and Archival data to contribute to data being collected by NMMZ towards determination and interpretation of the significance of historical sites and their cultural landscapes locally and nationally;
  • A review of literature reports and/or review articles covering especially the period 1830-1890;
  • Provide research, writing and editing support;
  • Assist the organization in facilitating field trips, workshops, conferences or other events;
  • Contribute to designing and implementation of initiatives, projects or programmes;
  • Other relevant tasks as deemed necessary by the supervisor.

Competencies

  • Excellent research and writing skills, as well as strong analytical aptitude and strong oral communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: being able to listen and collaborate with a wide range of players, being able to work independently, being pro-active and taking initiative;
  • Ability to collaborate with a wide range of colleagues;
  • Computer proficiency: MS Office and PowerPoint;
  • Language proficiency: English, Shona, and any additional Zimbabwean indigenous languages are an advantage;
  • Sensitivity to cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age differences.

Qualifications

  • At least a First degree in History, and a Masters / PhD student would be an advantage.
