Job Description

Position summary

ActionAid Zimbabwe (AAZ) seeks to engage a consultant to conduct a report on the State of Business and Human Rights in the mining sector – A focus on black granite mining.

Key deliverables

The consultant(s) will be expected to deliver the following:

  • Deliver a comprehensive inception report, including a complete set of data collection tools, during the inception phase;
  • A presentation of preliminary findings and recommendations to the AAZ team;
  • A PowerPoint presentation summarising key finalised findings and recommendations;
  • Final research report of not more than 20 pages.


The consultant or team must have the following experience and skills:

  • Thematic experience on natural resources governance, human rights and the extractives, mining law and women’s economic empowerment;
  • Geographic expertise in Zimbabwe in general and Mutoko in particular;
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Shona;
  • Extensive understanding and experience of sector – standard approaches to safeguarding and sexual harassment, exploitation, and abuse(SHEA);
  • Expertise in designing and managing rigorous research processes;
  • Experience in innovative qualitative and quantitative methods and analysis;
  • Experience in designing and conducting participatory and empowerment – focused methods and strong downward accountability mechanisms to actively share results and learning;
  • Experience in engaging in feminist, gender -transformative and / or gender – sensitive research;
  • Evidence of use of ethical considerations and methodological measures for that respect the rights, safety, and security of all stakeholders

Consultant / consulting teams are required to submit:

  • An expression of interest demonstrating how the applicants meet the Researcher Specification;
  • Technical proposal for the research / report including proposed activities schedule / work plan with time frame, methodologies including tools and participatory and gender sensitive approaches that will be used and why, in line with the above – mentioned project priorities and research standards;
  • Financial proposal (separating consultant day rates from anticipated personal expenses, and not including anticipated data collection costs related to ActionAid staff or project participants),
  • CV(s) of all members of the research team if more than one member, including an articulation of the role each member will play;
  • Please specify the team lead if more than one member;
  • Client reference or certificate of satisfactory completion of a similar or related research project (note: the lead researcher for this previous piece of work must be the team lead for the application);
  • Examples of previous relevant written work (e.g. research, policy brief) conducted on behalf of a client (note: please only share work samples where the lead author or senior team member is a member of the research team).
