Job Description

Tongaat Hulett is a focused agro-processing business, which includes integrated land management, property development and agriculture with business operations throughout the SADC region. Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe (THZ) Operations, is situated in the South Eastern Lowveld of Zimbabwe and is a major agricultural and sugar cane milling company.

The vacancy of Rail Inspector has arisen within the Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe operations. To comply with the Company’s governance framework, suitably qualified and interested people are invited to apply.

Operations/Location: Hippo Valley Estates
Reports to: Cane Haulage Manager

Purpose of Role

  • Responsible for the safety, maintenance, inspection and repair of Hippo Valley railway infrastructure, such as rail, cane cars, chains etc and custody and distribution of chains, as well as control of maintenance budgets and section staff administration.
  • To plan and coordinate workforce productivity and work efficiencies by anticipating and eliminating potential delays through planning and coordination of labour, spare parts, materials and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and monitors rail repair and maintenance budgets.
  • Approves materials for rail maintenance and repair.
  • Inspects rail track and repairs worn-out/damaged areas.
  • Manages the day-to-day railway maintenance activities.
  • Services track during off crop in readiness for season.
  • Keeps a record of repairs and services done.
  • Supervises fabrication of rail beams for use on rail track.
  • Investigates derailments and timeously repairs damage that may have arisen.
  • Investigates causes of rail failure together with the team and recommends corrective action to prevent recurrence.
  • Supervises and coordinates the rail gang, a team of 22 employees that includes Rail Supervisor, welders, patrolmen and gang employees.
  • Keeps a daily record of all defective cane cars and liaises with service provider departments for their repairs.
  • Coordinates the distribution/allocation of chains to farmers and interfaces with various stakeholders and the community on activities to be undertaken in connection with the rail track.
  • Controls chain movement by distributing chains to all growers and keeping a record of chain transactions
  • Identifies training and development needs and recommends intervention programs.
  • Champions Safety, Health and Environment issues for the section.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Certificate or Diploma in Rail Track Engineering or the equivalent.
  • Have trained as a plate layer with any rail system, with proof of completion of training.
  • Should be a holder of a clean class 4 driver’s license.
  • Should be able to work under pressure and during odd hours.
  • Should have comprehensive knowledge of Safety, Health and Environmental issues.
  • Should be computer literate.
  • Should have more than 5 years’ experience as a platelayer.

Technical Competencies

  • Ability to understand rail track engineering techniques on both straight and curved track.
  • Standard competencies in engineering of formations.
  • Read, understand and interpret rail track diagrams.
  • Ability to investigate causes of derailments and recommend remedies to management.
  • High level supervisory skills.
