Location: Zimbabwe
Reporting to: Head of International Programmes at the headquarters
Supervise: Field Head of Administration and Finances
Type of contract: Fixed term contract for 1 year renewable.

Founded in 1993, Médecins du Monde Switzerland is a medical humanitarian NGO and part of the international Médecins du Monde network. We provide sustainable access to health care for people in vulnerable situations in Switzerland and around the world. We provide care and bear witness to the overcoming of barriers to health and to the realization of the right to health for all. Everyone should have access to health care, without financial, social, cultural, or geographical barriers.

In partnership with civil society organizations or local authorities, we implement projects on the ground to improve access to healthcare for women and children, people in vulnerable situations and victims of crises and conflicts in a sustainable way. We want to provide real access to health. Médecins du Monde’s actions are at the crossroads of humanitarian action and public health. We favour a global approach that aims to provide sustainable and comprehensive responses to inequalities in access to health. We reveal the intolerable to better denounce it! We call on regional, national, and international authorities to facilitate access to health care and promote respect for human rights. We advocate for sustainable change.


Zimbabwe about one in three women aged 15-49 has experienced physical violence and about one in four women have experienced sexual violence since the age of 15. Similarly, 19% of women of childbearing age have an unmet need for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and 21.6% of girls aged 15-19 have already started childbearing. Limited access to mental health (MH) care is also very high in Chimanimani and Chipinge districts due to a lack of specialized professionals as well as limited access to specific medications for patients. This difficult situation has been aggravated by the Cyclone Idai in March 2019 that hit the hardest the Province of Manicaland, specifically its two districts of Chimanimani and Chipinge. The floods and landslides led to the death of more than 300 people (with just as many still missing), the destruction of people’s homes, livelihoods and public infrastructure and the disruption of services. Since 2020, Médecins du Monde Switzerland (MdM-CH) is involved in the devastated area of Chimanimani to provide the continuum of care and a better quality of services. More specifically, we develop SRH and work on improving the identification and care of MH patients and of Gender based violence (GBV) survivors. To do so, MdM-CH is doing rehabilitation and refurbishment of health clinics and organizes training of health professionals on GBV, SRH and mental health. Together with a local partner, we also train community leaders to identify and refer potential patients.

Position summary

Develop the country strategy and programme(s) of MdM Switzerland in Zimbabwe in their strategic, human, financial, technical, administrative and logistical components in close collaboration with local partners.

Main tasks

Context and security follow-up

  • Follow-up and analysis of the local and national context (geopolitical, health, humanitarian needs);
  • Contribution to the elaboration and update of the security plan and tools, in collaboration with HQ;
  • Management of security incidents.

Project cycle management and partnership coordination

  • Provision of technical support in project cycle management to the partner;
  • Conduct of follow-up visits to verify the good implementation of the project activities;
  • Planning and follow-up of the project’s timetable, log frame, indicators, and budget;
  • Elaboration of internal reports.

Human resource management

  • Recruitment of field team members;
  • Management of the MdM team, conduct of evaluations and identification of training needs.

Representation and portfolio development

  • Elaboration of a programmatic vision, in collaboration with the authorities, the partner and other stakeholders;
  • Identification of funding opportunities, primarily from institutional donors, based on a donor mapping and an analysis of donor priorities and deadlines;
  • Development of new project proposals, partnership avenues and consortium opportunities;
  • Elaboration of external reports and of funding applications to donors;
  • Sharing of analyses and data with partners, including other NGOs, UN agencies and the authorities;
  • Participation and representation at local and regional humanitarian fora, including the relevant health coordination meetings.


  • Medical studies;
  • At least 2 years of experience in the humanitarian and development sector;
  • Field experience with an International NGO;
  • Proven experience in planning, follow-up, and evaluation of humanitarian programmes;
  • Proven experience in writing reports in English;
  • Patience and diplomatic skills;
  • Spoken and written English;
  • Motivated and adherence to MdM principles.

Additional skills and experiences

  • Proven experience in the elaboration of country strategies and identification of humanitarian needs;
  • Prior experience working for a medical NGO and / or in the management of medical programmes;
  • Proven experience in the building and follow-up of partnerships;
  • Professional experience working within country coordination teams;
  • Sound knowledge of the sector of institutional donors.
