Location: Harare


The Infectious Disease Research Laboratory (IDRL) is a clinical research lab within the Internal Medicine Unit at the University of Zimbabwe Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. The goal of the IDRL is to become a catalyst for expanding local research capacity and to engage and encourage local researchers and students in basic science research, as well as to improve health by conducting high quality locally relevant basic science and operational research and clinical trials. IDRL is looking for highly experienced Medical Laboratory Scientist to fill a position that has arisen.

The position involves conducting both research and routine clinical laboratory assays.

Position summary

To conduct laboratory assays in accordance with study protocols and ensure generation of quality data and results within prescribed turn-around-times. To ensure compliance with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice, Good Clinical Practice, Ethics, Biosafety and Clinical Research Guidelines.

Roles and responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required. The duties include the following:

  • Ensures that all samples are received, accessioned, and processed promptly and in a timely fashion and that results are accurately documented, reviewed, authorized and reported;
  • Ensures all client/participant information is documented accurately on laboratory samples and on accompanying documents;
  • Assists and communicates with clinical staff concerning patient care issues (e.g., confirm sample to be taken, advise of rejected samples, discuss clinical significance of results, patient /study participant results to be retrieved);
  • Preparation of samples and reagents for all laboratory tests including Flow Cytometry, Chemistry, Hematology, Serology, Virology and Microbiology;
  • Packages and dispatches specimens to referral laboratories if necessary;
  • Independently performs routine and non-routine clinical laboratory tests and assays which are moderate to complex (e.g., chemistry analysis, CD4 testing, antibody staining, flow cytometry, DNA / RNA extraction and analysis, standard and quantitative PCR, ELISA, cloning, Cell / tissue processing, immunology assays, culture, and routine equipment maintenance) in a safe and responsible manner and in accordance with laboratory protocols and good clinical laboratory practice;
  • Documents all testing activities on relevant source documents e.g lab books, testing logs etc;
  • Reviews results to ensure integrity and that there are no transcriptional errors and ensure that results are reported within stipulated turn-around-times;
  • Ensures that critical results are reported promptly to immediate supervisor(s);
  • Receives, checks, reports, and files results from referral labs appropriately;
  • Ensures that laboratory data obtained is of good quality and is reliable and that any transcription of the data is correct;
  • Assists in the preparation of laboratory reports;
  • Participates in the implementation of ongoing laboratory quality control / assurance and safety procedures and programs;
  • Participates in stock management, balancing inventories, stock count and preparation of orders timely to ensure uninterrupted supplies of consumables;
  • Performs daily laboratory housekeeping procedures including cleaning and waste disposal;
  • Participates in training and orienting new employees;
  • Performs first line service of equipment and routine equipment maintenance and performs daily equipment QC procedures and updates Levy Jennings plots before testing activities begin;
  • Ensures prevention of medico hazards by complying with biosafety and infection control standards;
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as delegated by the laboratory manager;

Supervisory Responsibilities: To supervise junior staff as delegated.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science with a 2.1 or higher; MSc in clinical or health related science or equivalent would be an advantage;
  • Experience working in a clinical research environment is required;
  • Exposure to Quality Management Systems is desired;
  • Experience with data analysis is desired;
  • Good Clinical and Laboratory Practice certification is desired;
  • Ethics certification is required;
  • Good Clinical Practice certification required; IATA certification for shipping samples is an advantage;
  • NIH Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research (IPPCR) is an advantage;
  • Open practicing certificate is a must;
  • Experience in laboratory procedures such as Biochemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Molecular, Microbiology, flow cytometry and Serology is desired;
  • At least 3 years’ experience in a clinical or research environment is preferred;
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of research and laboratory practice and data management;
  • Focused, energetic individual who believes in the public health impact of this work, is dynamic, hands-on, meticulous and takes initiative.

Language Skills:

  • Excellent English and report writing skills;
  • Ability to communicate effectively;

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of infectious diseases and related medical and patient care issues and concerns;
  • Strong laboratory procedural skills;
  • Mathematical Skills:
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Data analysis skills are desirable;

Reasoning Ability:

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists;
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form;
  • Ability to troubleshoot;
  • Computer Skills:
  • Strong Computer Literacy;

Certificates, licenses, registrations:

  • Current registration with the Medical Laboratory and Clinical Scientist Council of Zimbabwe- an open practicing certificate is mandatory and must be kept up to date.


  • Hepatitis B vaccination is mandatory.
