Job Description

A local Law-based NGO organisation invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced persons for the post of Executive Director.

Position summary

The Executive Director will be responsible for providing strategic leadership, fundraising, overseeing financial management, forging strategic partnerships, engaging funding partners, and overseeing performance management.

Job description

  • Envision, develop, and design programme concepts, with the assistance of the programme team, to ensure the overall objectives of the organisation are met, in line with the strategic plan document approved by the Board;
  • Develop benchmarks for results-based programme management by giving the programmes team targets and through guiding programme activities;
  • Lead all fundraising initiatives, giving direction and guidance to the organisation’s team to meet the objectives of the strategic plan, both for programmes and institutional capacity building;
  • Ensure, through the Finance and Admin Manager, financial compliance, accountability, transparency through financial reporting and checks and balances of all financial nature (grant agreements, grant income and other sources) by ensuring reporting and auditing requirements are met timeously and efficiently;
  • Identify and develop, together with the Finance and Admin Manager, a vision for financial planning, risk management and security of the organisation;
  • In liaison with the Finance and Admin Manager, overall responsibility for implementation of the human resource management strategy that includes staffing adequacy, recruitment, staff training and development, remuneration and overall employee motivation and wellness, disciplinary action, and dismissal;
  • Lead and propose strategic partnerships and networks to the Board that serve the advancement of the organisation in its strategic direction;
  • At the delegation of the Board, function as the “face” of the organisation, able to promote the organization effectively, partners, stakeholders, and donors;
  • Perform secretariat functions for the Board of Trustees.

Qualifications experience and competencies

  • Master’s Degree in Development Studies, Law, Social Sciences, Business Administration or equivalent with a minimum 8 years relevant experience, 5 years of which must have been at managerial level; LLBS Degree or relevant Social Science Degree with a minimum ten years relevant experience, 8 years of which must have been at managerial level;
  • Must have an excellent appreciation of local and global issues and trends related to human rights with a specific knowledge and exposure to human rights theory, policy and international instruments and frameworks;
  • Must have demonstrated experience in working in the civil society and understand the function in the broader political, social, and economic process;
  • Must be able to read, analyse and interpret legal and policy documentation;
  • Must be able to identify and propose relevant policy issues and to develop a strategic approach to advocacy around issues related to human rights;
  • Must be able to provide strategic leadership to the organisation and objectively always balance conflicting needs / interests of the organisation and exercise decisive leadership;
  • Must demonstrate a strong ability to ensure that the financial aspects of the organisation (strategic budgets, financial systems) are appropriately managed and to implement & supervise control systems and ensure transparency & accountability within the organisation;
  • Must demonstrate ability to analyse and interpret financial statements;
  • Must have demonstrated knowledge and practice of advocacy techniques and strategies;
  • Must be able to manage a heavy workload, frequent travel, and irregular work hours;
  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and must be proficient in both oral and written English;
  • Must have demonstrable negotiation skills and ability to network the organisation to various civil society partners and donors;
  • Should not be affiliated with any political party, nor holding any government position.
