A local NGO working in the area of promoting and advancing women’s rights, including women with disabilities is looking for a Communications and Advocacy Officer. The organisation aims to empower women in their diversities economically, politically and socially through amplifying their voices in all local and national processes, creating platforms for engagement, capacity building and advocacy.

Job description

  • Shall be a Communication and Advocacy officer who shall assist in reviewing and editing activity reports, media reports and documents prepared by various programs units for internal and external dissemination;
  • Draft sections of regular internal organisational activities reports and other relevant information as requested;
  • Provide content and other information inputs in relation to the visibility of the organisation;
  • Draft, edit and disseminate public information material and reports within the organisation and to external sources, including donor agencies, government counterparts and other interested stakeholders;
  • Liaise closely with the relevant units to regularly update documents such as newsletters, the periodic report, information sheets, brochures, PowerPoint presentation, and other written reports and materials on programmes and events;
  • Generate timely and engaging content and regularly update communication platforms including the website and social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter);
  • Contribute to the inclusion of appropriate gender awareness and disability inclusion in all communication;
  • Ensure all information is disseminated in accessible formats;
  • Ensure community engagement and beneficiary feedback is included in projects;
  • Provide information and inputs to programmes staff on public information issues;
  • Liaise with media, partners and government counterparts on the community activities events and human interest;
  • Participate in key mission events and workshops and undertake duty as needed in order to acquire material, including photographs, videos and stories of work being undertaken, that would promote organisation image with donors and governments;
  • Build internal public information and multimedia capacity;
  • Identify and be up to date with National Development and Legislative Frameworks;
  • Monitor local and international media and news and bring to the management attention on any publication;
  • Review and communicate specific information with local and international media;
  • Perform such other duties as may be assigned;
  • Identify capacity need within the organisation and community;
  • Identify gaps within policies and legislative frameworks for advocacy.

Key result areas

  • Provides sound advice and services in dealing with substantive matters concerning public information;
  • Develops and implements a creative approach to major communications and ensures effective design and delivery of information products in accordance with overall objectives and policies;
  • In consultation with supervisor serves as an effective spokesperson and forms strong partnerships with relevant parties involved to engender support for and advance the organisations objectives;
  • Develop and design and clearly focused advocacy strategy that defines the key advocacy messages, desired policy outcomes;
  • Effective implementation of the coherent PP Advocacy strategy jointly with national level advocacy NGOs;
  • Lead in updating and effective implementation of the communication strategy;
  • Together with the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer manage organisational data base;
  • Identify stories of change for effective advocacy;
  • Enhanced documentation and dissemination of publication and pertinent information regarding policy issues and practices in Zimbabwe that relate to organisational programs for communication and advocacy needs;
  • A good working relationship between organisation programmes and the media for effective advocacy is established;
  • Enhanced quality and effectiveness of all publicity events, media interactions and publications materials produced for organisations programs.

Job specifications

  • A University degree in Journalism, Communications / Mass Media, Law or Sociology.
  • A first degree with relevant, excellent proven experience may also be considered (A master’s degree is an added advantage);
  • 3-4 years related work experience;
  • Practical experience of working with CBOs, CSOs, government and development partners at local, national level;
  • Experience using and / or organizing media relations, web / mobile / social media, print and public events;
  • Keen interest and commitment to advancing the rights of women, especially women with disabilities;
  • Experience in conducting training on effective communications and advocacy;
  • Knowledge on community development, Women rights, Disability Rights project planning management;
  • Experience in using web-based tools to enhance communication capacity and advocacy is an added advantage;
  • Ability to work, communicate and advocate with a broad range of stakeholders including policymakers, government officials, NGOs, the media and community representatives;
  • Strong ability to engage with communities and capability in being proactive to organize community outreach activities, especially women with disability;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a fluent writing style and good knowledge and practical use of both English and Shona;
  • Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint, CorelDraw;
  • The prefered candidate should have experience in organisation virtual meetings and using its different tools;
  • Adaptable, flexible, able to take advocacy initiative and prioritize amongst competing demands.
