Job Description

In Zimbabwe, Lower Centenary Producers Trust (LCPT) is implementing an Integrated Rural Development and Marketing Project for smallholder farmers funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development. The aim of the project is to contribute to food security for 3,000 small scale farmers and to enable them to earn an extra income through marketing of their excess harvests.

Purpose and objective of the evaluation

The consultant will be anticipated to train farmers on chilli production using Good Agricultural Practices(GAP). As part of the training, the consultant will have some face-to face training and also develop a manual which will be used by project extension staff to train farmers. Area envisaged to be covered during this training includes but not limited to the following:

  • Chilli economy: business training of chilli farming- value chain analysis and market linkages. Increase farm income; Industry coordination and management;
  • Chilli varieties and saving seed. How to improve seed and adoption of GAPs that can lead to yield increment of 25% to 100%;
  • Seed adoption and drying techniques, Seed germination testing;
  • Site selection & land preparation, planting seed for growing chillies, insect and disease management in seedling nursery and irrigation; Soil properties and fertilisers;
  • Methods of growing chilli plants- raised bed nurseries; seedling trays; direct field ridges, ridge formation;
  • Soil properties and fertilisers. Soil properties, physical properties, biological properties, chemical properties, plant nutrition and fertilisers, soil sampling and testing, commercial fertilisers advantages and disadvantages, manure advantages and disadvantages, irrigation planning and management;
  • Increase chilli production (yield / acre) by using GAPs;
  • Training on how to increase plant vigour that can reduce expenses for pest and disease control;
  • Chilli pests management (Mechanical, chemical, cultural, biological and integrated pest management techniques);
  • Weed management (Mechanical, chemical, cultural, biological and integrated weed management techniques);
  • Major diseases of chilli (Bacterial, viral and fungal diseases). (Mechanical, chemical, cultural, biological and integrated disease management techniques);
  • Harvest and post-harvest management (Improve marketing of chilli through introducing of grading and sorting prior to marketing), Aflatoxin contamination management techniques

Expected outcomes and deliverables

  • Phase 1: Inception Report
    Short inception report and PP presentation outlining proposed methodology, mission work plan, time schedule and budget to be approved by LCPT
  • Phase 2: Training of Extension Staff
    The consultant will commence training of extension staff.
  • Phase 3: Reporting

Required qualifications / experience

  • A degree Crop Science or Horticulture or any related discipline with good knowledge of best practices in chilli production;
  • At least 7 years of professional experience in horticulture production and chilli production training using Training of Trainers (TOT) Approaches;
  • Experience in working with Government authorities, NGOs, development partners, civil society organizations and community-based organizations on business and socio-economic development;
  • Work experience in Zimbabwe, Mbire and familiarity with local language and culture would be an added advantage;
  • Report writing skills (sample reports to be submitted with references).
