Job Description

The Midlands State University Research and Innovation Office is dedicated to support students and staff research and innovation endeavours. As a result, the University is seeking highly qualified, knowledgeable, experienced, and committed individuals to assist in research support, intellectual property management services, technology transfer, and business development. Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced persons for the post of BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT OFFICER in THE RESEARCH AND INNOVATION OFFICE.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Science, Engineering or Technology.
  • Master’s degree in Business Administration or related postgraduate qualification.
  • At least three (3) years of working experience in a research and development environment.
  • A demonstrated track record of developing general business cases and aligning stakeholders to them.
  • Expertise in financial engineering and financial modelling is a distinct added advantage.
  • The candidate must possess good leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills at all levels within and outside the University.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Business Development Manager with portfolio management.
  • Translating technical concepts into commercially viable proposals;
  • Calculating the monetary value of intellectual property rights.
  • Creating and suggesting ideal transaction structures for potential spin-out firms and/or license opportunities.
  • Participating in the technology licensing and new venture development procedures, specifically structuring, negotiating, and finalizing deals.
  • Identifying and enlisting appropriate commercial contributors and investors.
  • Implementation of business development techniques to increase the profitability of innovations.
  • Mentoring on entrepreneurship/start-ups or spin-off culture.
  • Carry out any other duties as assigned by the Business Development Manager.
